Healing Heroes: How Psychedelic Therapy is Transforming Lives for War Veterans with PTSD

As many are gathering together to honor our veterans for Memorial Day, it’s a good time to reflect on the bravery and sacrifices of those who have served in the armed forces. While we stand for peace and natural justice, rather than war, conflict, and terror, we deeply support and honor the veterans who have dedicated their lives to the greater collective. Today, we explore how psychedelic therapy is offering a lifeline to war veterans battling PTSD and other trauma-related issues, bringing hope and healing to our heroes.

The Power of Psychedelic Therapy

Psychedelic therapy involves using psychoactive substances under the guidance of trained therapists. This therapy isn’t about escaping reality. It’s about confronting it, understanding it, and healing from it.

Studies show that after just a few sessions, veterans experience significant reductions in PTSD symptoms. [One study highlighted](https://www.brown.edu/news/2024-04-30/mdma-ptsd#:~:text=In a recent Phase 3,PTSD two months after treatment.) that 67% of veterans who underwent MDMA-assisted therapy no longer met the criteria for PTSD just two months after treatment.

[Another study from Stanford](https://vetsolutions.org/research/stanford-university-neuroimaging-study/#:~:text=The study%2C led by Dr,an improvement in cognitive function.) revealed that U.S. Special Forces Veterans who received ibogaine and 5-MeO-DMT at a psychedelic clinical program in Mexico reported substantial & dramatic improvement in PTSD symptoms and suicidal ideation after the program (63).”

These results are a testament to the potential positive impact that these psychedelic therapies can create in the lives of our veterans who suffer from PTSD and other serious traumatic brain injuries.

A Personal Journey

Let’s take a moment to hear a personal transformation story from a real-life veteran. This shortened anecdote is from our friends, Heroic Hero Project, where they share, **A Veteran’s Experience Microdosing.**

Meet Mike. He served in the Marine Corps from 2006 to 2010, spending time in Iraq and various other challenging environments. After leaving the service, he spent almost eight years searching for his purpose, battling the shadows of his past. Traditional treatments didn’t help much. Then, in the summer of 2020, a friend introduced him to microdosing.

Microdosing involves taking very small doses of psychedelics to gain positive benefits without impairing daily functions. Mike followed the “Stamets Protocol,” named after mycology expert Paul Stamets. This method involves taking psilocybin alongside other beneficial nootropic substances like lion’s mane mushrooms and niacin.

The results were transformative. Mike describes it as if a grey hue had been lifted from his world. He began appreciating the simple joys of life—the sunrise, the laughter of his kids, and the beauty in everyday moments. His creativity flourished, his mood stabilized, and his focus sharpened.

Here’s a quote directly from the war veteran himself,

“What I can say with 100 percent confidence is that ditching the narcotics and moving to natural solutions is something we as a society need to get more on board with. We can all heal from our trauma. It just requires patience, effort, and gratitude. Microdosing has helped me to see that.”

Mike’s story is a testament to the profound changes that psychedelic therapy can bring for many veterans facing PTSD.

The Science Behind It

Psychedelics work by affecting the brain’s default mode network (DMN), which is responsible for our sense of self and our thoughts about past and future. In people with PTSD, the DMN can become overactive, trapping them in negative thought loops. Psychedelics help by quieting the DMN, allowing for new connections and perspectives to form.

Terence McKenna, a renowned advocate of psychedelics, once said,

“When we look within ourselves with psilocybin, we discover that we do not have to look outward toward the futile promise of life that circles distant stars in order to still our cosmic loneliness. We should look within; the paths of the heart lead to nearby universes full of life and affection for humanity.”

This quote beautifully captures the essence of what psychedelics can offer—a journey within that heals and connects us to our humanity.

Moving Forward Together

The world can feel polarized and challenging, but at the end of the day, we’re all just humans trying to do our best. Our veterans have given so much, and it’s our turn to support them. By understanding and advocating for psychedelic therapy, we can help bridge the gap between pain and healing.

If you’re inspired, here’s how you can help:
